Air Cargo & Express Logistics Consulting

Volumetric weight audits, transparent airline routing, and expedited border clearance for time-critical commercial cargo across Australia.
When the shipment is urgent, there’s less room for error. A pre-shipment review can help identify avoidable costs, routing issues and clearance risks before the cargo leaves your supplier.

The Volumetric Weight Trap: Gross Weight vs. Chargeable Weight

Airlines charge the greater of actual (gross) weight and volumetric weight. The IATA volumetric formula is Length (cm) × Width (cm) × Height (cm) ÷ 6,000, which is the same as 167 kg per cubic metre. The result, in kilograms, is compared with the actual weight.

Example: a carton measuring 100 × 80 × 60 cm weighs 45 kg. Volumetric weight is 100 × 80 × 60 ÷ 6,000 = 80 kg, so 80 kg is charged, not 45 kg. Repacking the same goods into an 80 × 60 × 50 cm carton reduces volumetric weight to 40 kg, so the chargeable weight becomes the actual 45 kg.

The arithmetic shows the saving. Actual airline rates, minimum charges and packaging constraints still apply.

Commercial airlines use the IATA standard divisor of 6,000 (167 kg per cubic metre). Express couriers and integrators such as DHL and FedEx typically use 5,000 (200 kg per cubic metre), so the same carton can be charged at a higher weight. Check the divisor in each quote.

MyImpex is an independent client-side air freight consultant. We do not act as an airline ticketing agent. We audit volumetric chargeable weight, benchmark airline master air waybill options, and coordinate priority airport cargo handling for high-value and time-sensitive imports.

Selecting the Optimal Air Cargo Corridor

Express courier (integrator)

Door-to-door service with tracking, suited to small, urgent consignments. Pricing is usually higher per kilogram, and size and weight limits apply.

Commercial airline cargo (consolidated)

Freight carried on scheduled airline services, usually through a forwarder or consolidator. Often the best balance of cost and speed for regular pallet or carton volumes.

Direct master air waybill (MAWB)

A shipment booked with the airline under its own master air waybill, which can give more control over routing and handling. Generally suits larger, regular shipments.

Air freight usually makes commercial sense when delay costs, stock-out risk or product value outweigh the higher freight cost. For non-urgent cargo, fast-boat sea freight is often cheaper where the route allows it. We compare both on landed cost before recommending a mode.

Seamless Gateway Clearance at Sydney, Melbourne & Brisbane Airports

Air cargo is handled by terminal operators such as Qantas Freight, dnata and Menzies at Australian airports. Terminal storage charges can begin within 24 to 48 hours of flight arrival, so cargo should be ready for collection as soon as the flight lands.

Before wheels-down, we coordinate biosecurity inspection requirements and ABF lodgements, so the consignment can move to collection once the flight arrives.

Frequently Asked Questions

Chargeable weight is the greater of actual weight and volumetric weight. Volumetric weight is length × width × height in centimetres, divided by 6,000 for commercial airlines (the same as 167 kg per cubic metre). Express couriers typically divide by 5,000 (200 kg per cubic metre). Airlines bill whichever is higher, so packaging size matters as much as the weight of the goods.

Clearance time depends mainly on whether the import declaration and any biosecurity conditions are lodged before the flight arrives. Cargo with complete, pre-lodged documents is the fastest to release. Cargo that needs inspection or has document queries takes longer, so timing should be planned before departure.

Air freight usually makes sense when a delay would cost more than the extra freight, for example for high-value goods, time-sensitive stock or urgent replacement parts. For non-urgent cargo, sea freight is usually cheaper. We compare both on landed cost before recommending a mode.

We check documents and biosecurity requirements before the flight, and coordinate with the airline and terminal so cargo can be collected on arrival. Terminal storage is charged by the terminal operator, so the free-time window and collection plan should be confirmed for each shipment.
